From Home Salon
to Global Brand

What began as a passion for hair extensions inside a home-based Adelaide salon grew into an Australian brand, education community and international business. In this feature, originally published by Inside Small Business, Yovanka Loria reflects on the early years of YL, the rapid growth of the brand and her vision for empowering other stylists through education.

A Lifelong Passion for Hair

Yovanka Loria discovered her passion for hairdressing at a young age, beginning work in a salon on weekends and during school holidays from the age of 12.

Over the decades that followed, she built her experience across salons in Adelaide, Melbourne, Los Angeles and New York, developing both her technical skills and a deep understanding of the client experience.

After having her children, Yovanka opened a home-based salon in Adelaide in 2017. It became the setting in which her interest in hair extensions developed from a personal fascination into a much larger business vision.

Identifying a Gap in the Market

While working with existing hair extension brands, Yovanka began researching weft hair, installation techniques, business strategy and marketing.

Through this process, she identified an opportunity for high-quality extension hair supported by professional education and a more personalised approach to installation.

In 2018, Yovanka developed and introduced her own luxury hand-tied hair extension range under the Yovanka Loria Extensions name.

What began inside one salon soon became a collective brand encompassing salon services, professional extensions and stylist education.

Building the YL Collective

As demand for the extension range grew, Yovanka's husband, Vlad, joined the business and became an important part of its operations.

Together, they built the Yovanka Loria collective around three connected areas: the salon, the professional extension range and education for hair stylists.

Each area supported the others. The salon provided direct insight into client needs, the extension brand supplied professional products and the education program gave stylists the knowledge required to offer the method within their own businesses.

Growing a Community of Stylists

Rather than making the professional range broadly available, YL focused on building a community of trained stylists who understood the installation method, custom application and client experience behind the brand.

Stylists completed education before becoming approved providers and stockists, helping create a more consistent standard across the growing YL network.

The education extended beyond the practical installation itself. Stylists were also supported in areas such as consultation, client experience, marketing and developing a profitable extension service within their salons.

This approach helped transform YL from a product supplier into a professional community built around education, ongoing guidance and shared growth.

Expanding Into the United States

During 2020, Yovanka formed an international collaboration to introduce YL hair extensions to stylists in the United States.

At the time the original article was published, the brand had grown to more than 60 salons and stockists across Australia and hundreds of salons in the United States through its distribution partnership.

The international expansion created new opportunities for the brand and for the wider community of stylists working with YL products and education.

It also demonstrated how a business that began in a home salon could reach an international professional audience through a combination of quality products, education, relationships and a clear brand vision.

Education as a Pathway to Growth

As YL expanded, education became an increasingly important part of the business.

Yovanka recognised that many stylists shared similar challenges when introducing hair extensions into their services. They needed more than a technical demonstration; they also needed guidance on consultations, pricing, marketing and creating a sustainable business model.

The YL education program was developed to provide this broader support, helping stylists build confidence in the method while creating a new premium service for their clientele.

For Yovanka, supporting stylists to work more strategically became just as meaningful as the continued growth of the extension brand itself.

Recognition Within the Industry

The growth of Yovanka Loria Extensions gained recognition within both the hair industry and the wider business community.

In 2021, Yovanka received the South Australian Woman Innovator Award. YL Extensions was also recognised in the 2021 APAC Australian Enterprise Awards, receiving an award within the hair extension category.

These milestones represented more than business recognition. For Yovanka, they reinforced the potential to challenge established practices, create new opportunities for stylists and continue innovating within the professional hair extension industry.

Creating Opportunities for Salons

The feature also highlighted the experience of salon owners who had introduced YL Extensions into their businesses.

Adelaide salon owner and creative director Sam James shared that she was drawn to the quality and natural finish of the YL wefts after trialling them in her own hair.

Beyond the product itself, she valued the time invested in understanding her salon, business goals and desired direction.

This combination of extension education, business guidance and ongoing support reflected the wider aim of YL: to help stylists deliver a premium service while building a stronger and more sustainable business.

A Vision Beyond Hair Extensions

At the time of the original feature, Yovanka was preparing for the next stage of the brand's growth, including a dedicated headquarters, expanded education and future product development.

Her long-term vision extended beyond teaching a single extension method. She wanted to share practical knowledge across business growth, marketing, leadership, team culture, personal branding and self-development.

This reflected a belief that building a successful business requires more than technical ability alone. Confidence, strategy, culture and personal growth all play a role in creating something sustainable.

The vision was to use the journey of YL to empower other stylists and business owners to recognise what may be possible within their own careers.

The Yovanka Loria story began with a home salon, a fascination with weft hair extensions and a determination to create something different.

Through professional products, education and a commitment to helping stylists grow, that original idea developed into a wider community with an international reach.
